NEW CENTRE MANAGER FOR WELLINGTON SQUARE
Barry Parnell, 59, has been appointed Centre Manager at Stockton’s Wellington Square Shopping Centre. A local resident currently living in Ingleby Barwick. Barry has many years of experience in all aspects of shopping centres. He was centre manager at Castle Dene in Peterlee for 4 years, and previously Operations Manager at Hill Street Shopping Centre in Middlesbrough. An earlier career with building and engineering contractors Bailey Maintenance saw him working on contracts at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, Hartlepool, Monument Mall, Newcastle, Queen Street, Darlington and Prince Bishops in Durham.
Barry commented, “I am delighted to take on this new role in Stockton, as I am very familiar with the area, and it will be my aim to work closely with the retailers, get to know our customers, and join forces with the wider community in the town to promote Stockton and encourage more shoppers and visitors to see what we have to offer.
“It is good to start before Christmas, as the shopping centre has a real buzz about it. We have some great events taking place, and are giving away great prizes with Smooth Radio on Saturdays. From what I can see so far, the car park offer of free parking for two hours has helped to increase footfall, as shoppers take advantage of this saving. Christmas is an expensive time, so if we can help make it easier, it helps families as they stock up at our shops for Christmas.”
He added, “Next year is also looking good with new lettings in the pipeline. We have been making improvements to the shopping centre with new ‘state of the art’ toilets, and refurbishing some of our units to speed up the letting process for new retailers.”
Barry, who is married to Alison, has a daughter Louise aged 28, who lives in Gateshead. He takes over the centre manager’s job from Rob Gildersleeve, who has taken retirement after being at the centre since its opening.
Barry said, “I am coming in to an established centre, which has taken its place in the centre of Stockton as a leading shopping centre in the area. I will be looking at Wellington Square with a fresh pair of eyes, and will be looking to develop it further, together with the owners, to help it achieve even greater potential.”
